The Digital Hollywood conference is in its sixteenth year and it is still growing.  The Santa Monica conference attracted 1,950 people - 8% more than last year.  Digital Hollywood is held in several venues throughout the year, but the one held at the front steps of Hollywood itself is the best for getting a pulse of the industry.

If you want to understand an industry, follow the money.  Therefore, coverage and analysis of this year's Santa Monica conference focuses on three areas:

  • The "On Demand Viewer" - Hollywood recognizes the power of Video On Demand, the Digital Video Recorder and downloadable content, and they are exploring and struggling with the new business models.

  • Measuring Advertising - Brand executives own DVRs, and they are asking "why should I pay for ads that I skip?"  At the same time, the measurements that web ads provide are addicting.  The ad world is beginning to see the dollars shift.

  • DRM: Digital Rights Money - Digital Rights Management is that which enables commerce of digital media.  This year's debates were punctuated by the Grokster case and the formation of MovieLabs.  DRM continues to evolve.

If you weren't able to attend this conference, or even if you had and didn't attend these areas, you will find these in-depth notes useful.  Content is king, and there is no better way to understand it than to hear from the people that create it in Hollywood.
